A little over a year after launching Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week it would shut down the game in the coming year. Minecraft Earth players will have until June 30, 2021 to play the game in augmented reality. It's no longer available to download from app marketplaces and isn't available for purchase. Developer Mojang Studios attributed the shutdown to the coronavirus pandemic and the changes to daily life that it has brought with it. "Minecraft Earth was designed to allow the freedom of movement and collaboration - two things that have become nearly impossible in the current world situation," the studio said. Mojang, like Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to make it more accessible to players at home. Clearly, these changes were not enough.Games After many exciting adventures, we've come to the difficult decision that Minecraft Earth will be shut down in June 2021. We're extremely grateful for your help and today's final version has a number of tweaks to make these last months as enjoyable as we can: - https://t.co/D9fEGuOoqX - pic.twitter.com/KyHIToSrsI - Minecraft (@Minecraft) January 5, 2021 But if there's a silver lining in this day's news, it's that Mojang plans to exit Minecraft Earth in style. Mojang has released a final update for Minecraft Earth. It comes with modifications that "make your time in Minecraft Earth more fun." The update also stops real-money transactions, and dramatically reduces the time players to construct and craft things within the game. It also offers players the chance to look at all the content that Mojang was working on prior to the announcement today. The studio stated that they hope that these changes will allow players to explore, craft, build and share more, all while remaining safe indoors. Microsoft will delete player data on July 1 after June 30th is finished. You'll get a token when you make purchases in Minecraft Earth during the game's duration. This token will enable you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft to your smartphone. You can find more details about the shut-down on the Minecraft website. For Microsoft, this is definitely an unsatisfactory conclusion to Minecraft Earth. Microsoft had high hopes for the game when it was first shown in action at WWDC 2019. It's not a great indication for consumers using AR applications in the future that Minecraft Earth was unable to survive the pandemic using all of Microsoft's resources. "We're forever grateful for the incredible talent of the Minecraft community," Mojang said. "This was not an easy decision, and we're doing everything we can to make sure you get the most out of Minecraft Earth before it sunsets."
