In the midst of a new school year that may see students never stepping foot in a physical classroom, Microsoft is bringing Minecraft: Education Edition to Chromebooks. Chrome OS Minecraft: Education Edition will allow cross-platform play with Windows, iPad, and Mac versions. Students will be able to interact and collaborate on projects regardless of the device they use. Microsoft is also updating the software to include 11 new STEM lessons as well as a Minecraft world to teach students about pollination and bees. The update also comes with an updated library of lesson plans and tagged abilities. According to the company, Chrome OS, iPad, and Windows devices will automatically download the update. However, Mac users will need to download it manually. Schools that have already used Minecraft: Education Edition in their classrooms won't need to worry about changing their subscription. Microsoft will add the Chrome OS version to its Microsoft 365 for Education A3 and A5 licenses. Minecraft Education Edition has been in beta since 2016 It's a bit of a shock to learn that it's only being released to Chromebooks this year. Google' Kirn computing platform is the leading one for education. In the year 2019, the company said there were 30 million Chromebooks being used by schools around the world. minecraft were responsible for 60 percent of all laptops and tablets purchased in the US for classrooms for K-12 students in 2018. What's interesting about this release is that it offers Chrome OS users an official method to install Minecraft without having to sideload the game onto their device.
