A sentence of prison time for playing video games is pretty harsh, but it's possible when you're a child in Russia. Nikita Uvarov, 16 years old, was found guilty of "training for terrorist activities" by an Russian military court, after the teen planned to blow up an online version of FSB which is the country's domestic intelligence agency...while playing Minecraft. He was sentenced to a five-year imprisonment. The Moscow Times reports that Uvarov, along with his two friends, Bogdan Andreyev and Denis Mikhailenko were detained in 2020 for a slew of activities that the authorities concluded were part of a dangerous plot. Alongside planning to detonate an online version of the FSB the trio also distributed fliers to show support for Azat Miftakhov who is an alleged Russian anarchist who was arrested for vandalism in 2019. Authorities say they also employed improvised explosives to target abandoned buildings. As a result of all this, the two boys were recently found guilty of "undergoing training with the intention of carrying out terrorist activities," and delivered prison sentences. gaming , Mikhailenko and Mikhailenko each pleaded guilty to charges and were sentenced suspended. Uvarov however, insisted on his innocence and was sent to prison. It isn't clear whether the government is claiming that the video game was used to prepare terrorists. MINECRAFT , the wildly played video game, is renowned for its ability to let players construct their own custom-designed structures. The Russian government has made it clear that it believes the teens weren't just playing games and chatting about something more sinister.
